Guinea pig castration

 Well hello lovelies,

Today I'm gonna tell you all about guinea pig castration.

As many of you know November last year I got a male guinea pig called Marvin. He was on his own as he was a big boy and had been bullying the others.

I will get more into their care in another post but guinea pigs should be kept in pairs or groups as they are herd animals.

It's pretty hard to introduce two non neutered males. It can be done, but there's a high chance you will be left with two guinea pigs, in two separate cages that can't mix.

If the males are from the same litter and you buy them together. There maybe a little bit fighting but they should be fine together.

The ideal pairings are either 2 females or a female and a neutered male. I would never recommend breeding guinea pigs, as it can get complicated with the females pelvis fusing and needing a cesarean. An let's face it, there are enough homeless animals with out me making more.

Anyway sorry side tracked!!

So I chose to get Marvin neutered so I could get him a wife!!

He went in 8am three weeks ago this Friday coming and I got him back at 4pm. He was extremely grumpy and not very happy with me lol.

As guinea pigs need to have 2 incisions to remove the testicles, it means the wounds are rubbing on the floor of their cages.
His fur is starting to come in now in the above photo. But as you can see he is completely healed, lovely pink colour but still swollen. I will explain that later in the post.

So I had to remove all his bedding and replace with puppy training pads. They recommend news paper or a towel. I used the pads as they are absorbent and disposable. At least if he's sitting in his pee, it won't be as wet as a towel or news paper. As I'm going to admit he's not the brightest lol.
He has since had sawdust put back in as we thought he was all hunky dory!! This is also his temp cage. we are in the process of building a cage outside with heated floors and everything. So don't panic. I know this is a small cage for  pig! but its only for a short while.

So as his wounds are rubbing on the floor, he has a higher chance of infection and as his testicles are inside is body. With there being a void now there is a higher chance of abscesses.

To prevent infection and abscesses, along with his pain killers he is also on antibiotics. Pain relief is once a day and antibiotics is twice a day.

Guinea pigs like rabbits need to have theirs guts moving constantly. This means they continuously eat. Since they stop for an hour or so while getting castrated. You also receive a paste which he needs to be fed 6 times a day. Now I haven't used this as he has been eating fine, all his veggies, hay and any treats. But it's important to watch closely as if they aren't eating you need to be feeding them this paste and possible taking them back to the vets!! If their guts stop altogether it can be fatal.

Marvin was down on Saturday for a post op check and one of wounds had slightly came undone. So they took him back and glued it again. The wound wasn't red or inflamed so he wasn't chewing and licking it. It was just with him moving about.

It's important to restrict their movement as much as possible. So Marvin hasn't been in his pen. I've kept him in his cage.

I have been checking him twice daily and everything seems to be going fine.

It also takes up to 6 weeks for him to become totally infertile. So it will be June before I even think about getting him a wife.

Phew that's a bit of a long post lol.

I hope this helps anyone with s guinea pig, and if anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer.

There is a great YouTube channel called Pets Palace Tv. The girl Erin who runs it has lots of guinea pigs and has lots of good info on them.

P.s

It is three weeks later. Marvin in his self is doing great. Running about, eating, drinking and pooing. But on his left side he has a lump. Now I'm not sure about it, as it has never really went away since he got his op. I think it may be the start of an abscess. However I am phoning the vets tomorrow, so I will update you all on that!!

A Little Life Update

Well hello lovelies!!

I am very sorry I haven't been blogging all of last week!

I'm not sure if we had a bug or food poisoning. But we were all dying!!
It started on Monday night with Holly throwing up at about 10pm, then mark threw up at 11:30pm and I had tummy pains from about 1am on wards. No sickness for me which was a plus I suppose!!

It didn't help that at 11am on Tuesday, we had a mortgage adviser coming over for  chat!! I bet the poor man has been ill since!! We are currently trying to buy our house from the owner as we currently rent. The owner wants to sell which is awesome, Its just trying to get the first time mortgage that's a bit painful.

But I am all back to normal now and I will be back to blogging as of now!! lol

Speak soon my lovelies!

Slimming World Review - Syn Free Meatballs

Well hello lovelies!!!

Today I'm going to do a review on the Slimming World Syn Free Meatballs.

Here is the packaging. Excuse  the number 3 on the pack. That won't be on yours! I quite like this packaging. I think the meatball picture makes these look delish and you get a lot of info on it!

Frozen
To be honest they look like normal meatballs frozen lol.

Cooked
These were pan fried and there's no difference in appearance from the pan fried to the oven ones. I think pan fried are slightly drier than the oven ones. I also think in general these are drier than your standard meatballs. However these are low fat and considering the more fat in a product the more succulent they are, being a bit drier is to be expected. Having said that they are still more succulent than what I was expecting. So that's a plus!!

Flavour wise these are super yummy. Very well seasoned. I'd say that taste more like pork than beef but they are a pork and beef mix.

Overall they are a good product and I would suggests having these with pasta or even a meatball sub!

Let me know what you all think if you have tried these :)

How To Make A Successful Blog

Well hello lovelies :)

Today I am bringing to you how to make a successful blog!!

Now I am by no means qualified to do this post alone!! So I have linked up and got advice from some  fellow bloggers :)

Kate thinks - Making a successful blog takes lots of patience and time. Have a look at other blogs, get ideas for content, routine and layouts. Think long and hard about your blog name. Don't pick a name which  ties you into one topic unless that's what you want. Research and pick the best blog platform for you. Two most popular Blogger or Wordpress. Find a design and layout you like, if you don't like your blog it will show and neither will your readers.

Laura says - It's particularly hard when you have children.  For me, it was my retreat when my youngest wasn't at school, I used blogging for some me time.  I think so long as you are passionate and write posts that will spark interest in others your blog will go far.  Also being supportive of other bloggers, leaving nice comments on others blogs will help too.

Adrienne thinks - purchase a domain! Nothing more annoying than having a blog for a while and someone snaps up your domain name! Back up your site in case it's hacked or unfairly taken down. There's a step by step to do this through blogger here!! Be easy to contact ie get an email. That way you can create friendships and keep in touch with other bloggers. Get social media!! Twitter is a great way to contact other blogger, have conversations and advertise your site. Also sign up for bloglovin!!  It's a great platform for everyone to see you blog. Have a clean, tidy and easy to read layout. People are more likely to come back to your blog if they can find content easily.

Ellie says - Be true to yourself. Don't write about something because it's popular, trendy, or everybody else is talking about it. If you're not passionate about something you post, your readers will notice. Nothing is worse than damaging the integrity of your blog and losing the trust in your readers.

All these blogs are awesome and have lots of helpful content!! I hope you all go have a look!!

I hope this was helpful to anyone who's reading. Let me know what you call think in the comments :)

Hollys 2nd Birthday Party

Well hello lovelies,

I can not believe Holly is 2 years old!!
Her birthday was on Friday 27th but we had a family party for her on the 28th.

I can remember the day before I had her, I could only lie down or stand because of where her head was I couldn't sit normally.

Then I got this bundle of joy

To this a big 2 year old

Last years mile stones were walking and interaction with other kids.

This years mile stones are talking and potty training.

We will also get her nursery forms in :( I don't think I will cope with not having her with me on my days off!! I will be a blubbering wreck!!

Here are some photos form her party.
This was our party table we had set up. We also had sausage rolls, wraps and egg muffins.

Standing on her new bubble bouncer

Couldn't decide which cake she wanted.

This is the first time she has ever drank out a proper cup!!

Once everyone left it was nap time zzzz

This is that hat off her cake which I'm keeping and its going into her first box once it's hard.

I just can't believe how big she's getting. This is what I hate most about working full time. I feel like I'm missing bits of her!!

I hope you all had a great weekend. Speak soon
